How to receive SMS (iMessage) from iPhone to iPad, iMac, MacBook and MacAir


Starting with OS X Yosemite on Mac, a useful feature called  SMS Continuity (Message Forwarding), which allows you to (redirect) SMS messages from iPhone to a Mac computer has appeared. The essence of the function is the ability to redirect SMS messages from the iPhone to the Mac and back. Using the Message Forwarding function is only possible between the iPhone with iOS 8.1.x installed (and newer) and a Mac running OS X Yosemite (and newer).

How to receive SMS from iPhone to iMac, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and so on.


  1. Open the Settings application on your iPhone and go to the Messages section.
  2. Activate the iMessage service according to this instruction  (on the iPhone and iPad: Settings -> Messages , on macOS: the Messages application -> Settings -> Accounts ).In addition, you must use a single Apple ID on your iPhone ( Settings -> Your name (at the top) ->  iCloud ) and on the Mac ( System Preferences -> iCloud ).
  3. Go to the section Forwarding  (in iOS 8 function called Forwarding messages ). A list of computers that are on the same Wi-Fi network and associated with the same Apple ID account will appear.
  4. Select the desired computer and activate the radio button. A form will appear to enter the confirmation code. The Messages application will generate and send a confirmation code to the selected Mac.
  5. Open the Messages application on the Mac with the activated iMessage service (iMessage on Mac is activated by going to Messages  -> Settings -> Accounts ). A six-digit confirmation code sent in the previous step appears.
  6. Enter the code received on the Mac in the form on the iPhone.

Congratulations you have successfully activated the function  SMS Continuity (Message Forwarding).

The function is the next brick in the construction of a single integrated ecosystem of Apple. With its help, you can correspond with relatives and friends, while using as an iPhone and iPad, and the Mac. At the same time, it's not difficult to send a message to the interlocutor, you just need to click on the corresponding icon in Contacts.
